We found this post box near the entrance to a former British military barracks in Dublin, now housing the Decorative Arts & History Museum. It took us a moment to realise the V R on the top of the box refers to Victoria Regina, and we figured this must have been installed some time around 1900. I think it's great that the Irish Post office has taken it over and is still using it!
I knew what the V and R stood for right away! How very cool to make such an interesting discovery!
ReplyDeleteThat's so great! Don't fix what isn't broken, right?
ReplyDeleteYeah that was so cool to find they are still using it. It still performs perfectly well as a mailbox, and people have been shoving postcards of Dublin in it for 111 years. There is so much beautiful ironwork in Ireland. For example, the 19th century lamp posts, as you can see pictured in the background of this page.
